Introducing Santa Maria da Feira

Santa Maria da Feira is in the Porto Metropolitan Area in northern Portugal. It combines a strong industrial and export base with more than 20 years of international recognition for its cultural and creative life.

The best-known symbol of its food heritage is the Fogaça da Feira, a certified traditional sweet bread. Every January, the Festa das Fogaceiras carries it through the streets in a centuries-old votive procession.

Four major events link the city’s food heritage with creativity, urban regeneration and community participation: the Fogaceiras Festival, the Imaginarius street-arts festival, the Viagem Medieval (Medieval Journey) and Perlim. Together they draw more than 850,000 visitors a year.

Santa Maria da Feira became a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2021. It invests in education, training and local brands to strengthen the entire food value chain.

Challenges and actions

Like much of the Iberian Peninsula, the region faces longer heatwaves, droughts and a higher risk of wildfires. These put pressure on local farming, forests and the seasonal products that shape its cuisine.

Large festivals and a busy restaurant sector create food-waste challenges, especially at peak times.

The city responds by promoting local and seasonal products and by bringing nutrition, health and sustainability into gastronomic education. It also plans a hub for research, training and innovation in regional products. Cooperation within the UCCN supports this work, including the “Food 4 Thought” international conference at Europarque.
