/ Measurement

What gets measured can be understood, improved and scaled.

Measurement is at the centre of ICFG.

UNEP emphasises that credible measurement is the foundation of effective action, yet many countries still lack robust food waste data [1]. ICFG encourages cities to use internationally recognised methods — including the UNEP Food Waste Index methodology [1] and the Food Loss and Waste Accounting and Reporting Standard [8] — so that results are credible, transparent and comparable.

  1. 1

    Establish the baseline

Understand how much food waste exists, where it occurs and what is driving it.

  2. 2

    Identify priorities

Use data to identify the areas where interventions can have the greatest impact.

  3. 3

    Track action

Monitor the implementation of food waste prevention and circular solutions.

  4. 4

    Measure results

Assess changes and quantify progress over time.

  5. 5

    Scale what works

Use evidence to strengthen successful approaches and support their replication.
